Chatham Cup Quest Continues

Which teams will be left after this weekend's ties in the Chatham Cup as 32 teams from around the country continue their quest for cup glory, with four Mainland teams going head-to-head? On Saturday, Ferrymead Bays host current Cup holders Cashmere Technical at Ferrymead Park at 2:30 pm with a sodden Saxton Field the venue as Coastal Spirit travel north to face Nelson Suburbs at 2:00 pm on Sunday.

A tight encounter is on the card between Bays and Technical after the two played out a 1 – all result in the Southern League last weekend, with Bays looking to the home advantage to tip the balance and move into the Round of 16. The last time Bays had the home advantage in the cup against their neighbours, the game went into extra time before Technical advanced 5 – 4 on penalties, with Tech then going all the way to claim a back-to-back cup win back in 2014. Technical will again be without Garbhan Coughlan, which should also play into Bay's hands.

For Coastal, it will be their second Chatham Cup game in a week after their previous round match against Parklands was delayed and only played on Tuesday evening, with Coastal winning with ease, 7 – 0. When the two met in the Southern League in May, the game ended in a 2 – 2 result, with Suburbs unlucky not to take the win in the final minutes. The continuing wet weather in Nelson over the past fortnight has meant limited training time for Suburbs which is not the ideal preparation for what is just the second time the two sides have been drawn together in the cup, with Suburbs winning the earlier tie 1 – 0.

In the other South Island ties, Mosgiel faces Dunedin City Royals, with Green Island hosting Northern.

Coastal Favoured To Advance Quarter Finals

Coastal Spirit SAS will be at short odds to move into the Quarter-Final stages of the NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup when they face arch-rivals Cashmere Technical at St Albans Park at 11 am on Saturday.

Coastal has had the better over Technical in recent seasons, and this year has been no different, with Coastal winning their two New World Women's Premier League fixtures, 4 – 2 and then 7 – 1, a fortnight ago. Also, Tech will be without their hard-working midfielder, Nichola Dominikovich, which will not make their hopes of an upset that much harder. It is the seventh time the two have met in the cup, with Coastal having prevailed on each occasion.

In Dunedin, the other two South Island teams meet, with Dunedin City Royals taking on Otago Universities.
