English Cup

The Morrison Mitsubishi English Cup, first played for in 1913, saw the opening round played on ANZAC Day with four of the six-ties seeing clear winners - Cashmere Technical - current cup holders, Christchurch United, Halswell Utd and Selwyn Utd. Coastal Spirit need a late goal to knock-out Waimak with Parklands advancing into the semi-finals after edging Burwood in a penalty shootout. The winning sides now going into the quarter-final draw along with St Albans Shirley and Ferrymead Bays who had a bye. 

Technical opened strongly against FC but they failed to put the ball into the net from a handful of chances in the open ten minutes. Tech finally took the lead in the 15th minute when Jacob Richards scored. FC levelled minutes later when Harvey Stephens took his chance with FC then defending well to go to the break level. A cheeky back heel by Garbhan Coughlan put Tech ahead after 55 mins before teammates, Lachie McIssac and Lyle Matthysen scored to take the game away from FC, 4 - 1.  

In the other all Southern League match-up between Selwyn and Nomads, infront of a healthy crowd at Foster Park, Selwyn took the lead when Liam Coleman netted midway into the first half before Jacob Grosvenor then doubled the lead before the break. Thomas Parker put Selwyn three up before William Holland reduced the margin. Jamie Carrodus then made it 4 - 1 from the penalty spot. 

Universities held Christchurch United for the first 20 minutes with Daniel Meyn then opening the scoring which was quickly followed by a second from Luca Molnar. The second half followed a similar pattern with the students defending well early on until two goals in the space three minutes to Jackson Cole and Sam Philip saw United safely home 4 - 0. 

It was the same scoreline out at Halswell Domain that Halswell got up over Western. Pat Cameron scored in the opening minutes with Jacob O'Connell then scoring a brace before Cameron completed his double late in the half to see the Hawks well in control going to the break. It remained 4-0 to Halswell as neither side could add to the scoring in the second half.    

In the eastside derby between Burwood and Parklands it was a tight affair at Clare Park with both sides having chances in normal time but neither side could break the deadlock with the game then heading straight into penalties, with Parklands winning the shootout 5 - 4. 

Out at Kendall Park Waimak took the lead, in what was a scrappy game just before the break when Mitch Quigley opened the scoring. Coastal levelled in the 46th minute when Omar Cameron scored. As the game was was for another penalty shootout, a push in the Coastal goal area saw a penalty awared which captain, Dominic McGarr, stepped up and scored to see his side advance, 2 - 1.

Reta Fitzpatrick Cup

The Morrison Mitsubishi Reta Fitzpatrick Cup, affectionally known as "The Reta' also commenced on ANZAC Day with to two ties played. Universities CWCL side defeated Western 4 - 1 with Ferrymead Bays edging Waimak 1 - 0, to advance into the  quarter final draw with the six sides that had a bye in the opening round, current cup holders, Coastal Spirit SAS, Cashmere Technical, Halswell Christchurch United, FC Nomads, Selwyn and Universities SQL. 

It was a tight affair between Universities and Western with both going to the break all square at 1 - 1 with Danielle Brdanovic putting the students ahead after 21 minutes before Madeleine Wilson levelled for Western. Brdanovic scored her second early in the second half before Kate Fox extended the lead from the penalty spot with Brdanovic completing her hat-trick three minutes before the full-time.   

Goals were hard to come by in the tie between Waimak and Bays and it took something special to break the deadlock with Bays awarded a freekick just before the half time break. From just outside the goal area, Lucy Goodwin scored direct on the angle to the left of goal.
