
Come From Behind Wins
Coastal Spirit, Christchurch United and Nelson Suburbs had to come from a goal down to secure wins in Round 10 of the Southern League (SL). Both Coastal and Suburbs were 2 - 1 down at the break, with Coastal coming back to defeat Selwyn 5 - 2 and Suburbs ending FC Twenty 11 hopes of causing the upset when winning 4 - 2. United edged Nomads 2 - 1, with all the goals coming into the second half. After a battle, Cashmere Technical defeated Dunedin City Royals, with Ferrymead Bays ending their three games losing run when coming out on top of Universities of Canterbury (UC) 3 - 0.
Technical now has 28 points, Coastal 26, United 24 and Suburbs 19. Nomads stay on 14, with Bays now just a point behind. Royals have 10, Selwyn 8, UC 7 with FC still without a point.
Mason Stearn finished a flowing length of the field move to put Coastal Spirit ahead after 27 minutes with Selwyn replying almost immediately when Jamie Carrodus from the penalty spot. Minutes later Selwyn went ahead after Liam Coleman finished well after being allowed to run unchecked. Selwyn went a player down after their captain, Jack Allatt received two yellow cards in quick succession just before the break. Coastal were back on level terms when Selwyn turned the ball over near their own goal and Mohamad Taqizada scored. Coastal took control of the game in the final quarter, with Danny Boys, Alex Steinwascher and Api Rabuka all adding goals to maintain their winning run.
It was another tight battle between Nomads and Christchurch United in an entertaining opening half with Nomads again not making the most of their chances., with United rattling the crossbar. A slip from United keeper, Steven Van Dijk allowed Josh Holland to slot the loose ball under the keeper to open the scoring just after the break. Brendan Koplin, who was making his SL debut off the bench, used his pace to race onto a loose ball and finish well as Nomads keeper, Regan Frames raced off his line. Frame then made a great save to deny David Yoo putting United in front. With ten to play United scored the winning goal when Jackson Cole was left unmarked by the back post and was untroubled to score his first SL goal of the season.
Heavy overnight rain and rain during the match in Nelson made for tricky conditions between Nelson Suburbs and FC Twenty 11. Suburbs were ahead after just three minutes when Lennon Whewell made the most of a Josh Moffatt mistake. With Suburbs looking to press forward whenever possible FC twice hit on the quick counterattack, the first to George Siddells after 25 minutes and then in added time to Ari Johnson with both taking their chances well. Suburbs coach, Neil Connell, rung the changes at the break making four changes. Ben Polak made the most of a great ball from Alex Ridsdale to level for Suburbs with Whewell putting Suburbs back in front six minutes later after a pinpoint pass from Polak. Whewell completed the scoring in added time when bagging his second hat trick against FC.
Both keepers in the Cashmere Technical / Dunedin City Royals clash, Tech's Danny Knight and Jonathan Tucker for the Royal produced several fine saves to ensure the sides turned scoreless at the break. The deadlock was finally broken when Zander Edwards finished well to put Technical in front with thirty to play. Minutes later Jack Hallahan fired a shot onto the Royals post with Garbriel Gallaway, who had just been subbed on was first to react to the loose ball and secure the win for Technical. Technical now back up on Tuesday evening in their quarter-final of the Morrison Mitsubishi English Cup against Nomads.
Yusaku Wasaki scored his maiden league goal for Ferrymead Bays when scoring for Bays midway into the opening half. Bays doubled their lead when Jamie Williams also opened his SL account when finding the back of the net on the hour with Cameron Rean adding the third ten minutes later.
Round 11 will see United face Bays on Thursday evening and on Friday, Coastal entertain Suburbs, Royals meet Nomads, FC line up against Technical with Selwyn having the home advantage over UC.

Top Qualifiers Win
Dunedin City Royals, who won the Southern Football Qualifying League, and Cashmere Technical, winners of the Mainland QL both recorded wins in the opening round of the Women's South Island League (SIL). On Saturday the Royals defeated Coastal Spirit SAS 2 - 0 and also in Dunedin on Sunday the defending SIL champions, Cashmere Technical topped the table when accounting for Otago University 3 - 0, with the final game of the opening round, Roslyn Wakari versus Nelson Suburbs is scheduled to be played on the 6th July.
Shontelle Smith had the honour of scoring the opening goal of the league when scoring on the half-hour in what was a tight opening half. The Royals gave themselves some breathing space when their captain, Rose Morton found the back of the net with 30 minutes to play, to ensure her side maintained their season-long winning run without conceding a goal.
The opening half between University and Technical was also even with Anna McPhie scoring the only goal of the half in the 19th minute with McPhie making contact with the post when scoring which saw her subbed off later in the half. With seven minutes remaining, Margi Dias doubled the lead and in the final minute of normal time, Rosie Hayman made it 3 - 0, just after being subbed on.
In the coming round, the Royals face University, Technical host Roslyn and Coastal travel north to take on Suburbs.

Waimak Lead Men's CPL at Mid-Point Of Season
Waimak top the New World Men's Premiership after Round 9 of 18 was completed on Saturday. The North Canterbury side weathered some early chances from Burwood before scoring just before the break in what turned out to be the only goal of the game which was called early after a serious injury to a Burwood player with around 10 minutes of normal time to play. In a seven-goal thriller, Nomads Reserves scored in added time to edge Ferrymead Bays Res. 4 - 3. The other three games ended in draws. It was 1 - 1 between Selwyn Res. v Western and Halswell v Parklands with the Cashmere Technical Res. v Christchurch United Under 20 Academy game ending scoreless.
Waimak now has 20 points, four clear of Technical with Halswell on 15. United and Burwood have 14, Nomads 13 and Selwyn 12. Bays remain on 10 with Western 8 and Parklands on 2.

Women's Premiership Underway
The New World Women's Premiership commenced on Saturday with NW United setting the early pace when accounting for Selwyn 5 - 0 after skipping out to a 4 - 0 lead at the break. Universities of Canterbury were the other big winners when defeating Ferrymead Bays 4 - 0. A goal in each half allowed Cashmere Technical Res. to defeat neighbours Coastal Spirit SAS 2 - 0. The final game ended in a 1 - 1 stalemate between UC Maroon and Halswell.
